Our History

We are an independent not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization that serves individuals living through Bexar County and South Central Texas, including Atascosa, Comal, Edwards, Frio, Guadalupe, Karnes, Uvalde, and Wilson Counties.

In 1977, a group of compassionate individuals from St. John’s Lutheran Church and Grace Lutheran Church joined hands to establish Christian Senior Services, driven by a heartfelt mission to provide meals and care to the elderly in need. By 1980, Meals on Wheels commenced home deliveries, uniting with local churches and volunteers to deliver thousands of meals. While the home-delivered meals program flourished, the demand for meals surged, prompting a bold move: purchasing a former cafeteria to serve as our headquarters and expanding Grace Place to accommodate more seniors, especially those battling Alzheimer's.

Flash forward to 2018, when we officially became Meals on Wheels San Antonio, commemorating 40 years of service and extending its reach to neighboring counties. Amidst challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, our commitment remained unwavering. We adapted, serving even more vulnerable individuals, amounting to our move towards a state-of-the-art facility, the Meals on Wheels San Antonio Campus of Grace, to meet the growing demand, along with the reopening of Grace Place Alzheimer's Center in the Ed & Bobbie Masoro Amheimer's Center at the Campus of Grace.
